In a photographic practice which transcends the documentary style, allowing for a visual reflection that is fitting to our contemporary reality, Felipe Romero Beltrán establishes intriguing dialogues between architecture, landscape, and the terrestrial situation of (im)migrants. These components allow him to reflect on how the authorities, the law, and the border altogether affect the everyday lives of so many people in limbo about the status of their residence.
In 2023, Felipe Romero Beltrán and I had a conversation where we discussed the artistic intentions behind three of his series: Reducción (2019), Magdalena (2017-2020), and Dialect (2020-2023). In that first open interview, we wanted to paint a bigger picture, elaborating on how the photographic work came about, touching on motivations and interpretations.
